Prom: Put The Drinks Down

When I read the article on Boston.com about the drunk driver that hit a mother and daughter, who were out walking their dog on a brisk Saturday morning, I couldn’t help but think about all the prom goers who are inundated with information about remaining safe and not drinking and driving.

Imagine for a second what Jonathan Caruso, 18, of Saugus, MA, feels like as he sits in a prison cell awaiting his hearing tomorrow. It’s easy to think and say out loud, how could a young man, whom I don’t know, be so careless and stupid to drink and get behind the wheel of his car to drive some friends home, along with himself?

Mr. Caruso has to be feeling remorse and sadness to find out that he killed Carol Marean, 67, and injured her daughter, Charlotte Marean, 41.

What I found interesting from the television news reports and The Sunday Boston Globe, was that the passengers in Caruso’s car initially got out and began to run away, but a neighbor told them to stop because she saw who they were.

As more proms take place, I hope and pray that there aren’t more drunk driving accidents involving high school seniors. For now, that’s all we can do…..hope and pray!
