New Film Questions If MCAS Meeting Its Goals

The debate over the MCAS exam is subject of a new documentary produced by Professor Louis Kruger, director of the School Psychology program at Northeastern University.

It's a critical look at the high stakes test and it essentially questions whether the MCAS is meeting the goal and closing the achievement gap and preparing kids for college.

Among the critics in the film is state Representative Carl Sciortino.

The failure with MCAS is that now the educational process is centered upon a test. Leaving the idea of applying and nurturing creative intelligence out to wither.
With MCAS as the focus, children are only learning to pass a test, in addition the process adds the strain of a heavy stress burden upon participating students. That is not good, because such consistent forced learning, learning without a natural or real purpose, is not natural. It may even be detrimental to the spirit. Normally a young mind aspires to inspiration, interest and creativity. Play time is important as is rest and as are opportunities to break out of lines that conform to specific patterns of methodology as typically imposed by programs such as MCAS. Real educational change is needed, but unless it can break away from politics and the special interest of teachers unions, fly by night state paid psychologist, as well as stubborn administrators
it will not ever happen.
