Depressed Cities

BusinessWeek Magazine did their yearly ranking of 'America's
Unhappiest Cities'
and it appears that after the numbers have been
tallied, Worcester isn't on the list. Thank goodness for that!( Time
to celebrate by ice skating on the rink on the Worcester Commons.)

The city that took the number one spot was Portland, Oregon with St.
Louis, New Orleans and Detroit ranked as second, third and fourth,
respectively.

Based upon items such as suicide rates, murders, divorces and
unemployment, BusinessWeek put together their ranking.

Where does this leave Worcester? We can take sollace that we have an
upcoming election and CHANGE is in the air, or is that the odor from
the Millbury Street compost site that I'm smelling at the moment?

Snow: I can't take it any more!

OK, I'm officially SICK of winter, and certainly the snow!

This coming from someone that for the past 15-plus years has had to
explain why a person, who grew up in the Virgin Islands, would move to
cold and snowy New England. Hey, it started with the pursuit of
edcation and then I fell in love with the area.

Don't hate on me for not knowing what the Blizzard of '78 was like; I
had to contend with hurricanes, the worst being Hurricane Hugo!

Instead of walking 2-miles to school in the snow or catching a school
bus, I took a ferry boat from St. John to St. Thomas daily. Don't
hate....appreciate.

So, now that my family has rubbed in my face the beautiful weather
taking place in the Caribbean, I hope for this being the last time,
it's time for me to get back to work and move this snow!(Cue the
music: Poison's "Nothing But A Good Time".)

Weather: The Snow

Worcester's been blanketed with over 8-inches of snow and even though it's subsided, it's still snowing lightly.

For an example of how much snow we've received on the east side, check out the "snow cake" that Mother Nature has blessed us with once again. And here I was, thinking that winter was done for. So much for wishful thinking.

Change Is Inevitable

The Republican National Committee is banking on Michael Steele turning
things around for the RNC, but can the first Black Chairman be the
beacon that so many think he is? That, as they say, is the one
hundred million dollar question.

Steele has been very critical of President Barack Obama's election and
even stated that Governor Deval Patrick's election was more of a
cultural phenom than political ideas.

Some political analyst see Steele's chairmanship as a retort to the
Democratic party's strategic placement of key politicians over the
past 6-years.

When Steele was elected, he quickly "laid the smacketh down" by firing
the entire RNC staff and made some big promises for the turnaround. He
even went as far as to say that he was going to bring the "the hip hop
generation," into the GOP. (Yeah, right!)

Can a Black man that is galavanting for the GOP bring ethnic and
racial groups to the party? I certainly don't think so, as the message
of the GOP doesn't appeal to many Hispanics, Blacks, and the
frustrated Whites who will quickly state that President Bush was the
worse President the United States has ever had.

Well, we'll have to wait and see if Steele becomes "that dude" and
leads the RNC against Governor Patrick, as he runs for relection next
year, and Obama in 2012. He's even been so bold as to state that, "It
will be interesting to see what happens in 2012, when the novelty of
having a black president has worn off."

At least we know we're going to be a part of yet another historic
event in the United States of America!
