Hit & Run: 3 Children Injured

The accident that the Telegram is reporting on the top of their website was something to partially witness. What’s more disturbing is the fact that the driver hit the children and then sped-off, not stopping to see how the children were doing or, God forbid, dead.

I travel on Endicott Street daily, and particularly near Millbury Street, folks are always speeding down the street, under Interstate 290, “trying to beat the light” at the Millbury Street intersection.

Today, three children were struck at this intersection, two girls and a younger boy. I happen to see the kids often, and I can tell if I’m running “on time” to pick-up my child from school. They’re good kids that are always looking out for each other and making sure that the little boy is not trailing behind.

I’ve seen them use the crosswalk, and, even, hold each other’s hand when it’s snowing or the roads are covered with ice.

Earlier today, at 3:39 pm, I drove through this intersection and saw the three kids hustling on their way home. I make it by Crompton Park and all of a sudden I hear, “Someone STOP him!” and I immediately put my right turn signal on and pull over. I look in the rear-view mirror to see a small SUV swerving to go around me. Low and behold it’s the same green-ish Toyota RAV4 that Worcester Police Department are now looking for. Normally, when folks are yelling, I take in what’s going on and figure out my exit strategy, but something said to turn around and offer whatever assistance I could.

Luckily the girls were all alive, even though one of the females had a six-inch laceration on her head that was extremely deep and will require a number of stitches.

The other girl was laying in the Endicott and Millbury Street intersection with her book bag, umbrella and coat covering her. She was in severe pain, but kept attempting to stand up, because she wanted to check on her sister and the little boy, who were on the sidewalk near the barber shop, Boston’s Finest.

The little boy’s injuries seemed minor, and it only appeared that he was struck in the mouth and his gums were bleeding.

I must say that Worcester Police Department (WPD) responded very quickly and all of the officers were shaking their head in disbelief that someone could hit three children and then flee.

I ask you to Pray for these kids and their families and I hope the driver of the vehicle that struck the kids is found, arrested and faces the music.

Love is LOVE!

New Film Questions If MCAS Meeting Its Goals

The debate over the MCAS exam is subject of a new documentary produced by Professor Louis Kruger, director of the School Psychology program at Northeastern University.

It's a critical look at the high stakes test and it essentially questions whether the MCAS is meeting the goal and closing the achievement gap and preparing kids for college.

Among the critics in the film is state Representative Carl Sciortino.

Does The MCAS Cause Students To Drop Out?

utterli-image
Since Massachusetts implemented this high stakes test 15 years ago, it's been controversial. And debate is about to flare up as changes to the rules make the English and math sections more difficult to pass. One of the central arguments is whether or not MCAS is causing kids to dropout.

In our continuing series "Project Dropout," WBUR's Monica Brady-Myerov looks at the relationship between high stakes testing and dropping out.

Let the games begin

The news in Worcester has been sporadic, at best, about who is
actually running for City Council seats, but Ido find solace in
"cleaning house".

There is an under current and it's a good one. Now, if we can get
folks to stop speaking in their small circles and make their voices
heard by holding open forums and town hall meetings to address the
issues facing Worcester.

From the meeting that took place this past Saturday(7th), now is the
time to share with city residents what the action points are and the
timeline for getting things done. Communication is warranted Mayor
Lukes and City Council! Don't hide, even though it made no sense to
hold a meeting to discuss City of Worcester business in Boylston.

So, read this as a warning, the games have begun and if you don't step
up, you'll be stepping out! Get your walking shoes.

Miss Konnie: Watch It!

When I read the post on Daily Worcesteria that Mayor Lukes doesn’t read the blogs because, “they aren’t worth paying attention to.” Well, it doesn’t surprise me one bit that Miss Konnie doesn’t feel the blogs are worth paying attention to because all that she wants to do is go on WCCA and pontificate on her “Soap Box”.

Mayor Lukes, please read this post or someone tell her about it because it is my way of saying since you won’t read the many great blogs that exist in the city, you will hear about how we go in and bring the news that you won’t find in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette or even Jordan Levy’s talk show.

The New Media in the new millennium have been blogs and videos and I will be the first to show you how it should be done.

I actually encourage all the Worcester County bloggers to step their game up on the political front and show Miss Konnie how much influence we do have, and, particularly, how much impact we have in the electoral voting arena.

Oh, baby! It’s ON!!
