Puff Puff Give

With the recent cigarette tax increase I wonder how hard it is for
folks to feed their habit?

When friends in New York City started emailing and Tweeting that it
costs $10 for a pack if cigs in the Big Apple, I pulled no punches and
said, "That's y'all's asses!"

As more establishments ban smoking, I wonder how many folks are
going to quit?

Do you smoke, and, if so, how much do you spend on cigarettes in a
month? Post a comment or email us at WorcesterIsMAJOR[@]gmail.com.

Marketing Massachusetts

The marketing of Massachusetts has taken an interesting turn with the
new campaign that shows the many great places to visit on the Bay State.

What I do notice other than some great animation is the fact that the
word 'Massachusetts' is written in multiple colors reminiscent to the
gay pride flag. Maybe, just maybe, Massachusetts has figured out how
to market itself by being the first state to approve same-sex
marriages? We all know how that governor of California feels about
same-sex marriages and I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to make a
run for Congress in the near future.

So, we have it all here in Massachusetts and I wonder if it causes us
any harm? Or have we fond soulmates in the great people that call
Massachusetts their home?

Smacking Statues

When I heard the news about the cat that knocked over the Moses statue at the court house, I immediately thought of the defunct WWF, now the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), and could picture him storming out the door and drop-kicking the statue. No such luck, but to think that this guy was so frustrated over a 20-year old speeding ticket, it made me wonder. Have you ever been so upset by something that you’ve destroyed public property?

Ballin' in The Woo: Not Happening!

I don't like to revisit posts, but when things like this happen, I am forced to bring it back to the front page and let folks know about it.

On February 25, 2009, I wrote Sports: Worcester BLEW It! Again! because of all cities to get a NBA Developmental League team, Portland, ME landed a team, which is a feeder for the Boston Celtics. Well, look who just announced that they, too, are getting a NBDL team......Springfield, MA!

Yes, Springfield is the birthplace of basketball and it does play host to the National Basketball Hall of Fame, but Springfield? Wow! I'm speechless and fuming and refuse to write another word about how City Manager O'Brien and Mayor Lukes don't get it!

Congratulations to Springfield and owner Michael Savit (HWS Group) for having the cojones to do something that so many said couldn't be or shouldn't be done.

Worcester Is MAJOR salutes you!

GOP Targets Tax Hikes In State-Wide Campaign

Tax hikes have emerged as a flashpoint in a series of community meetings led by the Massachusetts Republican party.

The GOP has just wrapped up six such meetings across the state.

WBUR's Fred Thys attended one recently in Middleton, north of Boston, and found divided opinion on the tax issue.
