Need to PRETEND?

I actually know someone that has used a similar type of car rental
company.

He was in Miami and wanted to hit all the hot spots and clubs with a
"Phat Ride" and decided to rent a Ferrari in fire-red.

Rest assured, he got alot of looks, but knew in his heart that he was
trying to "fake it until he makes it".

My words to him were........MAJOR Fail!

SAVE-a-Job

The smallest state in New England, Rhode Island, is leading the way in
proposing a statewide "work share" pilot program.

Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed is grabbing the bull by the horns, as
unemployment hovers around 10 percent, and is proposing a bill that
will save jobs and encourage companies to shave hours instead of people.

Hey, a 4-day workweek is better than receiving a pink slip, right?

Boston Is MAJOR

A good friend of mine from Maryland sends me an email last night and
wrote, "I saw this and immediately thought of you and your blog."

I noticed that it it was a link to the Nike website, and knowing that
he likes sneakers as much as I do, I thought the link was going to
take me to see some Boston sports-team colored kicks.

So, to say that I was surprised and immediately started smiling. What
I saw is this "Boston Is MAJOR" t-shirt from Nike.

I guess the good folks from Beaverton, Oregon feel that the Boston
Celtics need all the support they can get in the NBA Playoffs?

At least we can say that Worcester was the first to claim that we ARE
MAJOR!

Kids can argue about playing video games more than ever.

Kids and adults alike can argue with their parents that playing a video game can earn them $1 million dollars for pitching a perfect game in a video baseball game.

Wade McGilberry, the 24-year-old Alabama resident , got home from work and played the 2K Sports Major League Baseball game and earn a million dollars in 90-minutes.

Media Changing at the Speed of Light

As the world turns, and I'm not writing about the soap opera, but with the advancements in technology, Newsweek magazine is now up for sale and its only a matter of weeks (I hope) before Allen & Company find a buyer.

I guess covers such as Palingate that I wrote about back in November 2009, in her running shorts and Joe Biden laying the smacketh down didn't do enough.

City at Dusk: Beautiful

The City at dusk, on a night like tonight, is beautiful!

For a day that we've seen ominous clouds, bright sun with humidity,
and now a drop in temperature, you have to enjoy New England weather.

While I fumbled looking for my point and shoot camera, I was able to
snap these pictures with my cellphone.

The Circus Train pt. 2

The Circus Train

No, it's not the usual "Circus Train" that you may have initially thought about (read: City Hall), but truly the circus train for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey made it's way through Worcester yesterday.

I first spotted the train in the Quinsigamond Village-area and then again on Lafayette Street.

I have great memories of going to the circus, not in the Virgin Islands because there are enough circus-like animals in the Caribbean, while living in New Orleans and Boston, and just spotting the train brought a smile to my face.

Summer Jobs: Where do they exist?

It's hard these days for the average adult to find a job and it's
even harder if you're a teenager living in Worcester County.

I don't know about you, but I grew up in a time when I worked numerous
summer jobs- gas station attendant, office assistant, boat crew member
and waiter. Through each job, I was able to learn new skills and
learn what it meant to work for someone and earn a paycheck.

As a teenage employee working 30-40 hours during the summer, you get a
sense of independence and the ability to buy the things you want or
the often-striked deal with your parents of saving money to buy school
clothes and supplies.

Nowadays, summer jobs are few and far in between and there are many
teenagers who want to work and learn, but have no job prospects
because those jobs are being snatched up by adults and technological
advancements that allow one person to do multiple jobs.

Take Johnny Earle, owner and creator of Johnny Cupcakes, who worked
multiple jobs while growing up and eventually settled on printing
funny and odd t-shirts that he sold from bands truck. Johnny, who is
currently driving accross the United States with his traveling trunk
show selling t-shirts and speaking to kids and adults alike about
doing what you love and what it means to start you're own business, is
featured in the May issue of INC. Magazine in an article told from his
mother's perspective.

The article is insightful and funny and a hidden point that I picked
up on: Johnny had various summer jobs.

Teenagers, if you're actually reading this, it's time to hit the
streets and start job hunting. You're going to need a headstart
because we know the streets are watching and it tough out there.

May Day: You look like an ALIEN

Yesterday was May Day and while there are many folks that will say that that International Workers' Day serves "no good" to the United States of America, that's the furthest thing from the truth because all of us, whether we want to admit it or not, we're ALL aliens.

There are some folks who live in Worcester who may be able to trace their family's history back to the Mayflower, but if you're like me, don't know the family's story because those stories and historical facts were never passed along or shared with your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents. They lay buried all over the world.

While we're still waiting on Barack Obama to fulfill the promise of immigration reform within his first 100 days as President, we are faced with an economy that has hit many Americans harder than a Mike Tyson punch to the mid-section or racial tension that has called for the Secret Service to increase their protection of the President (which is barely mentioned by any news media).

Immigration reform covers a large swath of the political landscape: on the far right, immigration reform may mean stricter measures on immigrants, and taking a "buffalo stance" against illegals, and on the opposite side of the debate you have people that marched in protest such as the 60,000 people in Los Angeles calling for the government to respect everyone's civil rights, reasonable livable wages for workers and a government-facilitated path to legal citizenship.

Just a few weeks ago, Arizona enacted a law that has caused alot of debate and has people up in arms all over the United States. Senate Bill 1070 makes it a misdemeanor for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying ID, and as long as the cop has reasonable suspicion that the individual is an illegal alien, s/he can arrest them. Although the measure takes extreme steps to confront and deter illegal immigration, the danger is that it gives law enforcement the unfettered right to demand identification from anyone s/he suspects is an illegal immigrant. To put it bluntly, if you look like you’re an illegal immigrant, the cops can single you out. And if you can’t provide papers, kiss your ass goodbye! In this way, the Arizona Senate and Governor Jan Brewer not only legitimized, but legalized, racial profiling, a practice that is irrefutably illegal according to both federal and state constitutions. Not to mention a catastrophic civil rights wrong.

A recent Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans favor the Arizona law, and only 39% disagree with it. And studies all over have proven Americans, for the most part, are perfectly okay with racial profiling. ”Hey, whatever you gotta do to make sure my flight doesn’t blow up!”

So, this isn't a Black, White or Brown issue, this is an issue that affects us all! If doesn't matter if you're a Republican or a Democrat, this affects YOU! Read the Arizona Senate Bill 1070 for yourself and get involved because this does affect us in Worcester and Massachusetts, as a whole.
