Senate: Sales Tax "Most Fair" Option

The state Senate has gone along with the House in approving a 25-percent increase in the state sales tax. Proponents of the hike say it’s the "most fair" option, while opponents worry it will be a further disincentive to consumers.

Puff Puff Give

With the recent cigarette tax increase I wonder how hard it is for
folks to feed their habit?

When friends in New York City started emailing and Tweeting that it
costs $10 for a pack if cigs in the Big Apple, I pulled no punches and
said, "That's y'all's asses!"

As more establishments ban smoking, I wonder how many folks are
going to quit?

GOP Targets Tax Hikes In State-Wide Campaign

Tax hikes have emerged as a flashpoint in a series of community meetings led by the Massachusetts Republican party.



The GOP has just wrapped up six such meetings across the state.



WBUR's Fred Thys attended one recently in Middleton, north of Boston, and found divided opinion on the tax issue.

Gas-guzzler Tax

It appears that not only is Governor Patrick looking to increase the
taxes on gasoline, he is now proposing to hit folks that drive so
called "gas-guzzlers" with extra registeration fees and offer
discounts to those that drive more eco-friendly cars.

So, businesses that need large trucks for their business or families
that need a SUV to accommodate their family not only get hit at
the pump, but Gov. Patrick is proposing hitting them with higher fees
when they go to the RMV! Let's see if this law gathers any support in
Massachusetts. 

If it becomes a law, Massachusetts would be the first  state to do so, prior to even California, which has been kicking around the idea for the past 4-years.

Leave it to Gov. Patrick to beat Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the punch!
