Second Line in LA

The traditional "Second Line" is well known throughout the world, but I bet if you mention "Second Line" to anyone, they'll quickly reply that it's a dance typically done in New Orleans.

Well, now there's a 'second line' broken in Louisiana that is gushing oil.

NOLA Police Kill Young man

Adolph Grimes III, 22, was shot in the back 12 times and twice in the side, by undercover New Orleans (NOPD) police officers early on New Year’s Day.

Grimes traveled to his grandmother’s home near the French Quarter to celebrate New Year’s Eve with his fiancée and their 17-month-old son. Three hours after arrival, around 3 a.m., he was found dead a block from the front door.

News: Mychal Bell not released from prison

After sitting in jail for 10 months and having his conviction thrown out of court last Friday, Jena 6 defendant Mychael Bell was not released from prison yesterday as expected because neither the prosecutor nor the judge showed up for his bond hearing.

"We showed up. There was nobody there," said Bob Noel, lawyer for 17-year-old Mychal Bell of Jena, La. "No DA, no judge." A woman who answered the phone at District Attorney Reed Walters' office said he had no bail procedure on his calendar.

Update: Mychal Bell's charges overturned

Earlier this evening, Worcester is MAJOR! received information regarding the Jena 6 case, and specifically the motion that will cause Bell's conviction to be overturned and there will be no sentencing on September 20th. Mychal Bell has been in prison since December 2006.

Bell's head defense attorney, Louis Scott, has relayed the official word to a number of websites and blogs that Bell's case has been sent to Juvenile Court. There will be NO sentencing taking place on Sept. 20th, but the rallies will take place on that day since there are 5 more trials to be held.

Word is quickly spreading throughout the US that Mychal Bell is going before a judge in Louisiana on September 20th, and a number of activist are asking people to make their way to LA.

As posted in an earlier post in August, the Jena Six are 6 black teenagers that are being prosecuted for beating-up a white student over a so called "white tree". Read the August 14th post here.

Rappers David Banner and Mos Def are among the few that are asking for concerned people to join them in Jena, Louisiana for various rallies and events.

The Jena Six

Last fall in Jena, Louisiana, the day after two Black high school students sat beneath the “white tree” on their campus, nooses were hung from the tree. When the superintendent dismissed the nooses as a “prank,” more Black students sat under the tree in protest. The District Attorney then came to the school accompanied by the town’s police and demanded that the students end their protest, telling them, “I can be your best friend or your worst enemy… I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen.”

A series of white-on-black incidents of violence followed, and the DA did nothing. But when a white student was beaten up in a schoolyard fight, the DA responded by charging six black students with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

It's amazing that in 2007, this type of "justice" is being carried out when Jim Crow Laws were abolished, supposedly, in 1965. We have an opportunity to encourage the Governor of Louisiana to intervene and provide justice for the Jena 6.
